Do you read anime blogs?
« on: July 26, 2008, 03:50:28 PM »

If you read anime blogs, which ones do you follow? If you don't and don't want to, why?

I only follow Memento (http://designchronicle.com/memento) and Happy Soda (http://happysoda.com)

Generally I don't like reading anime blogs because I want to develop my own opinions before I know what the general opinion is. Memento is the exception for me, but I only read his impressions/thoughts though, never the summaries. He blogs anime that I might not normally watch and through that I've been enlightened into watching some awesome stuff. But I don't always find Garten agreeable... and that's the way it should be.

I plan on starting my own anime blog soon, with whatever random thoughts/impressions I have about a series or the whole Japanese anime industry. Anime is my main love but I've only really contributed to manga so far.

I hate the kind of blog that would blog Code Geass just because it will generate more hits.

I usually would read the season previews... except for this summer season, because I was aligning anime seasons with school terms (3 per year) rather than seasons...

Occasionally if I'm watching something that's a bit confusing, or if I don't remember what happened a few episodes ago, I would go search up blog posts of a particular episode.

The only kind of blogs I follow regularly are food blogs xD I'd rather watch anime than read about it.

I can't believe people actually think that deeply about manga and anime.

This is like criticism for literature... Quite pointless for your average reader, but extremely interesting if one likes that kind of stuff.

Xiong, I for one don't see any inherent difference in literary value between written fiction, filmed fiction, illustrated fiction, audio fiction, or animated fiction.

Its true that TV anime usually does not have intelligent topics or have much to say about ie. the human condition. But I don't see this as being any different from the general lack of academic topics in American TV drama (The Hills, Heroes, Sex and the City, etc). Compare any kind of TV show (animated or live-action, from any culture) with what is achieved in film, there is a huge gap. TV always prioritizes the entertainment value, in film there is freedom to do anything.

In terms of what can be achieved between written language (novels) and moving Japanese illustrations (anime), I believe they have the same potential for excellence.

Hear, hear, Chara. I don't think that things that entertain us should be considered unworthy of discussion- and even TV shows can be fodder for a good debate, look at Buffy.
