I'm no expert, but here's my take on a few examples:

c07: "feeding other people's kids" - I think Hina wanted to emphasize that Rei is "someone else's kid", and you don't address a stranger by their first name (much less with a "-chan" suffix).

c13 - Rei is talking to Takahashi and was about to refer to Hina as "Hina-chan", then stopping to correct himself to "Kawamoto-san". This might be more appropriate because Takashashi calls Hina "Kawamoto" and not by her first name. "-san" is added for politeness, since Rei is speaking to someone he just met.
On the next page, Hina thanks Rei as "Kiriyama-kun" - you can see she's really flustered/happy that Rei created this opportunity for her to have contact with Takahashi - so it might be out of a combination of shock and utter respect for Rei that she uses the more polite address. Or it could also be a follow-up to Rei's "Kawamoto-san", but then Rei has already switched back to "Hina-chan" since it's just the two of them. Of course after dinner (on the same page), she's back to calling him "Rei-chan".

In Japanese, there's this concept of "inner circle" vs. "outer circle". "Inner circle" are usually your family and close friends. "Outer circle" is everybody else. I think in the first couple of chapters, Hina was still addressing Rei with "-kun", and gradually she switched to "Rei-chan". This might indicate Rei's transition from Hina's "outer circle" to her "inner circle".

And on a more general level, I noticed that Hinata frequently switches between addressing Rei as "Rei-chan" and "Kiriyama-kun" without any pronounced reason (usually when that happens in other works, it implies one character is angry at the other). It's something I haven't really seen before, at least not in recent memory. Is there any particular nuance or cultural matter I might want to be aware of in regard to this?

Are you sure you're not mistaking Akari as Hina? Akari usually refers to Rei as "Kiriyama-kun", while Hina calls him "Rei-chan". I guess it's easy to mix them up since they look similar :)

I don't care how old and slow you've become!
Thank you for another chapter of this excellent series!!

I can't imagine how much work goes into just one chapter but if wasn't for all of your efforts we wouldn't be able to experience this beautiful story and Umnio's work deserves it

3gatsu readers are the best.

My own interpretation of the last few pages where Rei is hearing the sound of the waves again is that he is regaining his motivation after meeting Takashi, who reignites his desire to know about more about the Meijin and what it is like to be on the other side of the "storm", a metaphor for the difficulties in the climb to the top.

We'll see next chapter, I think~ as he'll have a televised shogi match in it
*is dying to know what happens!*

Yop, Takahashi definitely gave Rei the push he needed to get out his slump.

I was planning to check out all those on your list except the Sacred Blacksmith... when I can finally watch my shows again. Anticipating that Nyan Koi will be dropped. Also I might check out Aoi Bungaku.

I think Takizawa did not become the Emperor of Japan, since Saki says 'in this country with no kings'. He became an actual *king* king.

Anime & Manga / Re: Death Note Live-Action by WB

I watched the 2 Death Note movies a long while ago (haven't seen the L movie yet), so this is from vague memories...

I didn't really like the first Death Note film much, but I gained a better impression after the 2nd movie. There are definitely differences between the manga and the movies, but somehow it kinda worked? in the 2nd movie anyway.

One thing that I remember for sure is that the actor for Light sucked. He couldn't do Light's evil twisted expressions at all.
