Title: Real Life Chobits-- would you?

Of Osaka University's ultra-lifelike androids, this is the one that bothers me the most because I feel the least uncanny valley with it/her. The Uncanny Valley is basically that gap that causes something that looks and acts humanoid, but makes you feel repulsed, creeped out, or awkward. Think of Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, that feeling you get when a very human-like figure subtly just doesn't feel right with you.

Clearly the technology has come a long way, and its going to go further. Give it another decade or two.

So if, one day we had Chobits, would you buy a humanoid persocom? Do you think you could spend the rest of your life with one?

Personally, I'd like a Sumomo or a Kotoko please!

Hmmm, that 'android' isn't very impressive. I mean, obviously everything on that video was scripted actions. I wouldn't be surprised if she started another loop of her message right after that.

One more thing that bothers me is her voice. If they're trying to make something that resembles humans, than don't give an android that looks like a 20-something years old a voice of a 10 year old. Her voice just made me think an otaku was responsible for her voice synthesizer.

Yeah, I'm not sure how far we are on creating AI but this one certainly wasn't even attempting at it, I think the goal was just to make a robot as lifelike in appearance and facial expression as possible.

Other androids from her family:

and the very boner-killing attempt at a child android, http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1230/1051298847_d12babebe5.jpg (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1230/1051298847_d12babebe5.jpg)

I guess different groups of robotocists are focusing on different aspects, like how Honda's Asimov was the first bipedal robot that could walk, run, climb stairs like a human can.

Found cool robot vids:

Cool videos, but I'm still not quite impressed with any. The robot just simply don't show signs of AI, all I see are scripted events.
Maybe a one that actually might impress me is the Asimov, which seemed to react to the old man's actions and to those of that kid. But it all could be somewhat fake, since the video is a commercial and not a stage demo.

Also, the human-looking androids still don't mimic the face and facial expression very well. But I guess this matter is more personal and for different people the androids will look more/less human.

Something I forgot to mention in my last post is, that when we do one day manage to create intelligent androids and they will become a product for the public, humanity will ,IMO, certainly face problems that are presented in Chobits - how should people treat the 'Persocoms'? What defines a being as 'alive'? Intelligence? Self-awareness? Fear of death? Feelings? And how can Persocoms distinguish 'feelings' from a state simply born from a generic script, if we, humans, can't even define feelings?

Oh yeah, I'll definitely buy one, as long as it doesn't freak me out like the one in the first video. It doesn't has to have fake boobs attached to it either (doesn't it just add up weight?).
I'd love having a bot fixing me gourmet dinners three times a day, cleans up the house afterwards, then goes shopping - and all that without complaining.

In terms of technology mind you, this hunk of junk still has a lot of time to go until it gets to the Chobits level. To make something move like a human, it has to not only move its hand in a few angles, it has to be able to move its whole body, simultaneously, without falling on its head. I believe right now, we're still not there both in terms of software, and mechanics.

Edit: By the way, have you guys seen the Terminator movies? That could be fun.

If they're not anywhere near as advanced and lifelike as Chi was, then no.
Molesting lolibots loses some of its appeal if they're not good enough.

As far as bridging the uncanny valley gap goes and getting people to empathize with robots, America is just doing it wrong.

Sankaku has found another small step forward, essentially combining some of the visuals of the first post and the motion of Asimov.
