I'd like to ask a few questions about the work, if you don't mind. Anyone looking may answer as well. =3
In chapter 28, Shimada assumes that to Rei, Gotou has "20 games" while Shimada has "5 games." I kind of get a vague sense of what Rei did here, but what exactly was the faux pas that he was guilty of? Was it judging Shimada and Gotou based on the number of games they had on record?
And on a more general level, I noticed that Hinata frequently switches between addressing Rei as "Rei-chan" and "Kiriyama-kun" without any pronounced reason (usually when that happens in other works, it implies one character is angry at the other). It's something I haven't really seen before, at least not in recent memory. Is there any particular nuance or cultural matter I might want to be aware of in regard to this?

Are you sure you're not mistaking Akari as Hina? Akari usually refers to Rei as "Kiriyama-kun", while Hina calls him "Rei-chan". I guess it's easy to mix them up since they look similar :)

For the first part, I think Rei's problem was that he only got five of Shimada's games to study because he just wrote Shimada off. He was being arrogant and just assumed he'd win, thinking his only real opponent is Gotou.
For the second part, kiwiish's answer sounds about right to me ^_~ haha or at least, she'd be more familiar with those details. And sorry I didn't get to this earlier.

Yeah, the thing about the amount of kifu he printed out of each of his upcoming opponents makes sense.
As for the second part, yes, I'm pretty sure I'm not making that mistake. At least, I hope not, or else that'd be a pretty sad thing to be guilty of after reading what you've released so far several times over for the sake of this series' TV Tropes page (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Manga/SangatsuNoLion) (imsorrytvtropeshatersforlinkingddontkillme). lol @_@;;
But yeah, while Hinata does primarily address Rei as "Rei-chan," there are times where she addresses him in other ways. Like addressing him as "Rei-kun" when they meet in the market at the start of the Obon Festival, and addressing him as "Kiriyama-kun" while she's complaining about Akari's habit of "feeding other people's kids." I can even point out instances in later volumes where she unmistakably uses both "Kiriyama-kun" and "Rei-chan" within the same chapter. Those instances particularly stood out to me, which is why I wanted to know if there was some kind of cultural thing that people familiar with Japanese culture would be able to explain to me.

I'm no expert, but here's my take on a few examples:
c07: "feeding other people's kids" - I think Hina wanted to emphasize that Rei is "someone else's kid", and you don't address a stranger by their first name (much less with a "-chan" suffix).
c13 - Rei is talking to Takahashi and was about to refer to Hina as "Hina-chan", then stopping to correct himself to "Kawamoto-san". This might be more appropriate because Takashashi calls Hina "Kawamoto" and not by her first name. "-san" is added for politeness, since Rei is speaking to someone he just met.
On the next page, Hina thanks Rei as "Kiriyama-kun" - you can see she's really flustered/happy that Rei created this opportunity for her to have contact with Takahashi - so it might be out of a combination of shock and utter respect for Rei that she uses the more polite address. Or it could also be a follow-up to Rei's "Kawamoto-san", but then Rei has already switched back to "Hina-chan" since it's just the two of them. Of course after dinner (on the same page), she's back to calling him "Rei-chan".
In Japanese, there's this concept of "inner circle" vs. "outer circle". "Inner circle" are usually your family and close friends. "Outer circle" is everybody else. I think in the first couple of chapters, Hina was still addressing Rei with "-kun", and gradually she switched to "Rei-chan". This might indicate Rei's transition from Hina's "outer circle" to her "inner circle".
